Over 150 separate species of pumpkin plants and many hundreds of varieties of every shape, color, and size. Most can be divided into four distinct categories - there are also plenty of hybrids. The following are the four subgroups which can then be divided in to dozens of species.

Pepo

Moschata

Maxima

Mixta

When you think of pumpkin, this is the pumpkin that comes to mind first. Pepo pumpkins have bright, yellow to orange flowers and pumpkin fruits with thick, deep-orange rinds and stiff, grooved stems.

Moschata group are more oblong rather than round in shape. They also often have tan skin instead of the bright orange or yellow exterior of other pumpkin types. These are heavily used in cooking.

As Maxima implies, this group includes pumpkins of enormous size. These are the contestants at county fairs for size and weight. One-hundred pounders are common in this class, and the weight record for a Dill’s Atlantic Giant Maxima type pumpkin is a whopping 2,323.70 lbs.

Mixta pumpkins commonly have a bulbous bottom and narrow top. Mixta's also include many miniature pumpkins. Mixta includes the most unusual and are heavily used in decorating. Mixta color ranges include:

  • Orange - Yellow - Blue - White - Green-blue - Grey
